Investigating Pattern in Year 3

During the Spring term Year 3's art project was Investigating Pattern. Pupils brought in pictures, textiles and objects that were painted, printed or sewn with a patterned design. They then looked at patterns from different countries and cultures (Japanese, African, Islamic), particularly Indian Rangoli and Kantha designs. In class they looked at the arrangement of pattern such as; repetition, symmetry, rotation and tessellation. Year 3 also looked at some patterns in close perspective that occur in the natural world , like plants, shells and fish scales, and tried to guess what the pictures were. They also discussed how some patterns and designs in differing cultures, are symbolic to their daily lives or convey a deeper meaning or message. Using coloured inks, the pupils drew and printed their own designs, thinking and exploring how shape and colour can be organised to make patterns.
